Do Link Exchanges Work? Posted in Link Exchanges, September 23rd, 2010
Link exchange refers to the practice of webmasters linking their websites to another website while using a particular keyword as the anchor text. When ranking websites, search engines consider the number of inbound links pointing to the site. Websites with more inbound links are considered authorities in their subject area and are therefore ranked higher than those with fewer links.
While search engines consider the number of inbound links when ranking websites, this does not however mean that all links are equal. You should strive to get quality links are opposed to a junk of them. For example, if you are in the dog niche market, links coming from websites that are in this niche are considered of higher quality than those from totally unrelated niches, for instance, the recycling industry.
Another thing that determines the quality of links is the page rank (PR) of the page from where the link is originating from. Website pages are ranked on a scale of 0-10 by Google, which is the biggest search engine in terms of market share and quality of results shown for user queries. A link coming from a page with a PR 0 is of lesser quality than one a page of a higher PR. Thus, having hundreds of links from a lower PR page may not be as effective as having a few from a high PR page. Links originating from high PR pages will boost your website’s ranking more than those from lower PR pages.
For best results, you should combine both on page and off page optimization techniques. You need a combination of both to boost your website up the search engine rankings. Make sure you have your niche keywords in your website content, use alt and meta tags, include title and H1 titles and ensure your website can be easily crawled by search engine bots by making a sitemap.
Link exchanges work and are the major determinant of where your website will rank. Getting quality links is more beneficial than having a mass of junk links. If you are looking for a way to boost your website rankings, you should consider exchanging links with relevant and authority websites.
