Are Link Exchanges Good For Your Website’s Health?

The simplest way to get into Search Engine Optimization, or “SEO,” is building links back to similar websites in the community to help webmasters in a niche to grow. Think of how many links you can get back in a few months for your new website. But you may be wondering are link exchanges good? There are a few common practices and precautions involved when exchanging links.

Blogroll Exchanges

In the blogging world, bloggers often interact with fellow bloggers for “blogroll exchanges.” This method of link exchanging opens up many opportunities to find a new audience in addition to an existing group for their blogs. Linking back to a relevant site is the most effective. For a better efficiency, exchanging links with a site within a sub-community of the main niche attracts users who may have an interested in the topic not covered wholly on either site.

Quality and Quantity

Exchanging links with a website that looks too good to be true can harm the reputation of a website if the site is banned from a search engine for using “Blackhat SEO.” Such practice involves hiding keywords, usually “stuffed” with over 15 or more keywords from the visible eye. If too many keywords are inserted in a page, it triggers a red flag. Also, linking back to such pages can invite unwanted guests to a website, especially spammers.

“Misplaced” Sites

There are a few dangers with exchanging links with other website owners. Exchanging links with a site that is totally irrelevant is considered a Blackhat SEO trick. You link back to an unsuspecting website, but you do not get anything in return. A dedicated webmaster of a movie website would never ask to exchange links with a website on shoes, unless, in a rare instance, they are somehow related to each other. Pay very close attention to the website before exchanging links.

Search Engine Ranking

If you get backlinks from quality websites, it can improve the ranking of the site: the more links following your website, the more “popular” your website is. Linking out to other websites from your site also helps, but linking out to too many can hurt, depending on the in-to-outlink ratio. Adding a “nofollow” tag on the HTML hyperlink tag tells the search engines whether the link is important. Using this can also prevent “burying” your site if you want to link to a site you do not not trust.

Link Back as Much as Possible

Regardless of the problems that lay ahead of link building, it is perfectly alright to exchange links. Use your best instincts when building a “relationship” with like communities. Exchange links at a slow pace and the rewards will return with full speed.
